LED Panels Back Lit and Edge Lt in the Dark Comparison

Edge-Lit Vs Back LED Panels
What is the difference between Edge Lit and Back Lit LED Panels?
Edge-lit were the first LED panels to hit the mainstream market as a great replacement for the fluorescent product on the market at the time. The design of an edge-lit LED panel has not changes much since then largely due to the design criteria, production methods and installation of the product the back-lit started to phase in in recent years. While edge-lit is a great product design and provides brilliant lighting then back-lit started to overtake the popular edge-lit LED panels for a number of reasons:

  • Efficiency - more light less watts

Back Lit - provides a higher efficiency package increasing light outputs while lowering watts consumed. This is because a Back Led LED panels have the diodes mounted on the underside of the back of the fixture shining through a lens and thin opaque/opal diffuser.
Edge Lit - panels have the diodes mounted in a aluminum channel shining towards the middle of the panels through a light-guide and this light guide material then adjusts the angle to a down angle (from the middle of the panel into the room through a thicker diffuser. More light is lost in the fixture and doesn't make it out of the fixture and into the room you are lighting. So, Edge lit will either give you more light for the same watt or the same light for a lower watt.

  • Less plastics - Back-lit uses less plastics

Back-Lit - utilises a small lens on top of fewer diodes which provides the light spread through a thin plastic diffuser
Edge-Lit - usually manufactured with a triple layer of different plastics (Reflector sheet, LGP (Light Guide Plate) and diffuser plate

  • Lower cost of manufacturing

Back-Lit - Less Parts, lower assembly time

Edge-Lit - More Parts, More assembly steps and more assembly time.

  • Diode Technology

Back-Lit - Newer Diode Technology, fewer, brighter diodes with a lens mounted close to the diode output
Edge-Lit - Older Diode Technology, more, less bright diodes mounted in aluminum channel to assist thermal management
