Dark Sky
Dark Sky is an accreditation for external light fixtures. The primary goal is to reduce light pollution and light trespass, reduce glare, protect animals and their habitat too. This image shows different key parameters which are reviewed and tested for each light fitting (luminaire) to be tested to for the Dark Sky standards.

International Dark Sky Alliance
The dark sky alliance operate by 5 lighting principles for lighting outdoor responsibly:

  1. Useful - Every light must have a clearly defined purpose & consider the impact it will have including wildlife an habitats
  2. Targeted - Direct light to only where it is needed. Use Shielding/cutoff fixture (see our article for more)
  3. Low Level - Lights should only be as bright as is necessary
  4. Controlled - Use light only when it's needed by using controls such as time clock or sensor)
  5. Warmer White Color - limit short wavelength blue light
